New Amsterdam: Blessing or Curse?

March 6, 2008

And no, I am not asking if the show itself is a blessing or a curse to television.  I am asking (myself mostly, but you can feel free to chime in) if immortality could/should be considered a blessing or a curse.  Truth be told, I didn’t watch the premiere in its entirety.  Instead I watched the first 15 minutes continuously, and then I skipped back and forth between that and Big Brother (that show just sucks me in!).  Even though I didn’t watch the whole premiere, I still feel that I got the basic gist of the story.  Only when I engaged in a conversation with Jennifer, did I realize that I had apparently missed something.  That something is the topic of the post:  Is John Amsterdam’s immortality a blessing or a curse?   I thought that he was “cursed” by the young Native American girl.  Jennifer told me that she didn’t mean for his immortality to be a curse, but rather a gift.  Interesting take on the word gift, but hey, she was well-intentioned I suppose.  So now, John is cursed (or blessed depending on your take, but I think we all know where I stand) to live forever until he meets his soulmate.  Does this mean that if he gets run over by a bus, he simply won’t die?  Am I confusing immortality with something else?  Won’t this curse/gift of immortality be kind of a waste if John gets hit by a bus before he can find his soulmate?  I think I am going to need some more answers (like Omar) but unfortunately like John said, his immortality didn’t come with a handbook.
