Lost: How Michael became Kevin

March 21, 2008

Interesting story last night about Michael’s unsuccessful attempts to kill himself and why Walt doesn’t talk to him anymore.  Deciding whether or not you should disclose exactly how you managed to secure freedom from the island to your pre-teen son is, to say the least, quite the quandary.  Do you leave out the details of how your murdered two people needlessly (“I didn’t ask you to do that.”<–great line from Ben) or just gloss over that part?  I respect Michael’s full disclosure to an extent, but then that part about murdering two people comes back into my mind.  Michael, as shown in his previous flashbacks, has never been the best decision maker, which might explain why he decided to resurface in the city he used to live in even though he was supposed to have died in the plane crash.  Even more confusing is why he decided to tell his mother not to use his real name, even though he shows up there from time to time (presumably).  Won’t the neighbors know him as her son?  A possible conversation might go like this:

Neighbor: Hey, how’s your son doing?  We haven’t seen him around lately.

Michael’s Mom: That’s not my son.  That’s Kevin Johnson.

Neighbor: (scratches head) Oh, sorry.  My mistake.

Anyway, I don’t feel like we learned anything terribly new last night.  The most interesting thing we learned was that Michael is not only a spy, but an assassin.  I am not sure that he was the best choice for the person who is supposed to take out an entire freighter of people, but Sayid wasn’t available, so I suppose Ben just had to make do.  I am probably forgetting and/or missing a few things, so I will remind everyone to consult the usual reviews.

So what did you think of last night’s “finale”?  Are you dreading the move to 10PM as much as I am?

Lost: The return of Michael, aka Kevin Johnson

March 14, 2008

So now we know that Sun is one of the Oceanic 6.  I know we were supposed to know who they all are by now, but I am confused.  I think I am missing a person.  Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun, and ??.   Who am I missing?  We know it’s not Aaron, so is it the guy whose funeral Jack went to in last season’s finale?

Anyway, there are more important things to focus on from last night’s episode.  Before we get to Michael/Kevin Johnson, I want to talk about Jin.  Poor, poor Jin!  Why did he have to die?  Some would argue that since he’s managed to turn his life around (remember the guy he used to be?), his story was complete.  I was trying to read his tombstone, but all I could see was 2004.  I thought it said September 2004, but this doesn’t make alot of sense to me because in the “The Constant” it was supposed to be Christmas day in 2004.  Have only 5 days passed?  Did Jin die before they could be rescued and that’s why it says September (in keeping with the story that there were only 6 survivors on Oceanic Flight 815)?  I think my head is spinning.  I really liked that they played Sun’s flashforward and Jin’s flashback simultaneously and waited until the end to let us know that Jin had died.  The whole night, I kept thinking that Jin was trying to get to the hospital to see Sun.  I had no idea that it was a flashback to only two months after he and Sun got married!

So that’s where Michael went!  This is confusing to me because the “others” took Michael and Walt away on a boat (we were led to believe off the island) at the end of Season 2, but then he turns up as (presumably) Ben’s inside man on the freighter that is owned and operated by the ominpresent Charles Widmore.  WHAT?  How did Ben manage to secure a spy on a freighter owned by a man after him?  Ben: 15,000,000  Charles Widmore: 0

Just what does Ben have to do with finding over 300 dead bodies necessary to properly stage the wreckage of Oceanic 815?  I have no idea, but all I could think was that in a way, the freighter was “Penny’s Boat” by extension.  I am desperate to make sense of everything that happened last night.  So, in keeping with my weekly ritual, I will consult Doc Jensen and Vozzek69

Lost: Juliet’s flashback?

March 7, 2008

In a season of flashforwards, we’re thrown a curveball by seeing Juliet’s flashback to her early island days and learn that she is most definitely an other, other woman that is.  It’s interesting that Goodwin was married to Juliet’s therapist, and even more interesting that Ben brought Juliet to the island, not just for her work in fertility, but because “she looks just like her.”  Looks like who?  It’s hard to imagine Ben having a personal life, and if I remember what his childhood friend looks like, she does not resemble Juliet at all.

Juliet’s flashback raises some interesting questions.  Are we to assume that she doesn’t leave the island?  I suppose it’s possible for her to leave the island, just not publicly.  Also,  I think Juliet’s willingness to let Daniel and Charlotte disable the toxic gas was a sign that she is finally going to stand up to Ben and his agenda, which we may have learned a bit about.  I am hesitant to believe that Charles Widmore is Ben’s nemesis, but at this point we don’t have a choice.  I find it difficult to believe that he would give Locke any real or pertinent information about his agenda.

Any guesses on Ben’s inside man on the boat?  I think we can all be fairly certain that it is Michael.  By now I’m sure everyone knows he’s set to make a return this season.  What did you think of last night’s episode?  Will Sun and Jin round out the O6?

Lost: What is the constant in your life?

February 29, 2008

If anything goes wrong, this blog will be my constant.  I don’t know how, but years from now, if I find myself stuck in a similar situation, I will try to access “jubilena is about to drop some knowledge.”  If that fails, then I will just proceed to call any number I can remember.

I was really worried about Desmond last night because I know that another major character is set to kick the bucket, and things did not look promising for him.  We learned nothing about the Oceanic Six or who Ben’s “inside man” is, but I didn’t care.  I liked learning more about Daniel Faraday.  He’s a fascinating and likeable (if not slightly disturbed) guy.

Other than that, I leave you with a reminder to check out “Things I Noticed” by Vozzek69 on Dark UFO and of course, Doc Jensen’s recap on ew.com.

Why isn’t Aaron one of the Oceanic Six?

February 27, 2008
From this week’s AA:
Question: Please settle a heated office dispute regarding Lost: Aaron is or is not one of the Oceanic Six?— Dane
Ausiello: Aaron is *** *** of the Oceanic Six.
Aaron was technically on the plane, so how is he not one of the Oceanic Six?  Does this mean that Oceanic Airlines covered up the birth of Aaron?  Why would they do that?  So far we know that Hurley, Jack, Kate, and Sayid are part of the O6.  Who do you think the other two members are?  Does that leave room for Sun and Jin to get off the island and live happily ever after?  Knowing Lost, probably not.  I know that some people think that Jack attended the funeral of one of the O6 in last season’s finale, but I am not convinced of this.  Of course, it’s entirely possible that I missed something, and that person was indeed part of the O6.

Lost: More questions + fewer answers = mixed feelings

February 15, 2008

I was really excited after the season premiere and even last week’s episode, but after last night’s Lost, I am having conflicted feelings again.  On the one hand, it was an exciting episode that revealed Sayid as another member of the Oceanic 6 (which we know is comprised of Jack, Kate, and Hurley).  We also learned that Ben is off the island and is Sayid’s “boss”.  I use the word boss loosely here because I am not exactly sure why Sayid is working for Ben and who they are after.  As you can see, this reveal raised more urgent questions.  I know that Lost requires enormous patience, but it becomes difficult to remember when presented with such startling information.  Here are my top questions after viewing the episode The Economist:

1.  Who does Elsa work for?  In other words, who the hell is the economist?

2.  Who is Ben’s spy on Naomi and company’s boat?  (This is a lingering question from last week that I suspect we won’t have an answer to for another two or three episodes at least.)

3.  What the hell was Daniel Faraday doing with that beacon thing?  That went over my head.

4.  Who did Sayid shoot in the beginning of his flash forward on the golf course?  He didn’t seem to be dangerous.  In fact, he seemed rather frightened by Sayid.

5.  Lastly, what does the inscription on Naomi’s bracelet mean to Sayid?  Why did that catch his attention?

Lost moving to Thursdays, 10PM

February 13, 2008

According to tvguide.com, Lost is moving one hour to the 10PM time slot on Thursdays starting in April.  Am I the only one who opposes this move?  10PM is TOO late.  I thought ABC had been over this before.  Isn’t that why it came back a few weeks ago to an earlier time slot?  Also, I don’t think they have the same audience as Grey’s Anatomy, so having the show on after Grey’s won’t necessarily translate into wonderful ratings bliss for Lost.  What do you think of the move?

The Lost Season Premiere: The Oceanic 6?

February 1, 2008

Finally, after months without Lost, we were treated to, in my opinion, a fantastic episode centering around Hurley.  Instead of addressing Jack’s current mental state (if you remember in last season’s finale, he was sporting a crazy beard and definitely on the verge of losing it), we were right back on the island with that weird satellite phone.  Don’t get me wrong though, I thought it was necessary to go back to that time even though we know that at least some people are off the island.  We need to know who Naomi is/was and why her crew was trying to trick everyone into thinking that she knew Penny.  More than that, we need to know more about the elusive (and slightly terrifying) Jacob.  Who is he?  What is he?

It takes a certain amount of genius and great attention to detail to recap Lost effectively, so I won’t bore anyone with an amateur review.  Instead, I am going to direct everyone to a review entitled, “Things I Noticed,” by some guy who goes by the name Vozzek69.  I discovered it early last season, and it’s probably the most well-written and interesting recap I have ever read.  It’s even better than Doc Jensen’s reviews on ew.com!   The website that houses these reviews, DarkUFO, is a wealth of information about all things Lost.  It’s really comprehensive, and you should definitely check it out if you have some time.

Before you abandon Jubilena is about to drop some knowledge, I want to include a list of questions I had about last night’s episode that perhaps you might have some theories for.

1.  Who comprises the Oceanic 6?  Hurley, Jack, Kate,……..?

2.  What made Hurley decide to leave Team Locke for Team Jack?

3.  Who was the “lawyer” who paid a visit to Hurley in the mental institution?  Also, who are the others he is referring to?  Does he mean the other plane crash survivors or the original “others”?

4.  What kind of secrets are the Oceanic 6 keeping?  Did they say they were the only survivors?

5.  Lastly (and I know this is probably the last thing on everyone’s minds), how did Locke survive being shot by Ben?

Lost finds a new home on Thursday night

December 14, 2007

The wait for Season 4 is almost over.  The season premiere will be on January 31, 2008 at 9PM.  Yes, that’s a Thursday, and yes that’s an earlier time.  The new time slot is going to be so much better because I found it difficult to really pay attention on a Wednesday night at 10PM.  So no more nights of going to bed wondering what you just watched because you were just too tired to stay awake.  Personally, I think it was a great move for ABC.  The only day better than Thursday would probably be Tuesday (my Tuesday schedule is completely open).

Are you excited for Lost to return?  Does Thursday at 9PM work for your schedule?

Is Jin’s future in jeopardy?

October 25, 2007

I just read on tvguide.com that Daniel Dae Kim has been arrested for drunk driving.  We all know what that means….Jin is going to die!  All the actors that have been previously arrested for drunk driving have exited the show in the worst way—via character death!

On a more serious note, what is with the cast of Lost driving drunk all the time?  No wait, what’s with celebrities driving drunk all the time?  Kiefer Sutherland was recently arrested for the same thing, if I am not mistaken.  US Magazine should have a “Stars, They’re Just Like Us” feature on drunk driving incidents.
