American Idol: An unexpected bottom three

March 20, 2008

Is America really that fickle?  They must be because two people I thought would never be near the bottom three this early in the competition were actually in the bottom three….with Kristy Lee Cook (which, let’s face it, was not a shock).  Of course, I am actually happy that Amanda Overmyer was voted out because she’s the kind of contestant that sneaks by and has you worried that she could be the winner.  What a sad day that would be.  She’s certainly not my American Idol.  Throughout the competition she has come across as arrogant and extrememly pretentious which is silly because you’d think a girl with teased black and white hair would have nothing to be pretentious about.  She was pretentious about rock (which is the worst kind).  If something isn’t in-your-face, then it’s just plain boring.  Well Amanda, apparently American thinks you’re boring and would rather endure Kristy Lee Cook on tour.  Embarrassingly enough, I concur.

The other singer in the bottom three, Carly Smithson (who was eventually sent back to safety), was a shocker.  She’s undoubtedly the best female singer in the competition and in my opinion, possibly the best singer in the whole competition.  Perhaps the problem is that she isn’t memorable.  Simon couldn’t remember her name a few weeks ago, and maybe America has a hard time remembering it as well.  Maybe her fans don’t think she’s in trouble, so they don’t bother voting.  Other than that, I can’t think of any reason why she would end up below Chikezie, Syesha Mercado, Ramiele Malubay, or Michael Johns (I like him, but he needs to do something great or he really will go home).

How do you feel about last night’s results show?

By Popular Demand: American Idol

March 12, 2008

I recently received an inquiry from a regular visitor to jubilena is about to drop some knowledge about American Idol, and why there have been no posts.  The reason I don’t blog about American Idol (usually) is because I feel that it would be nothing more than an endless rant about why I dislike someone.  I don’t want my blog to turn into a hate fest.  I want it to be about the things that are near and dear to my heart (or more appropriately, my entertainment interests).  This is not to say that I don’t regularly watch American Idol–because I do.   It’s just that I haven’t come across anything particularly blog worthy yet.  I am not in awe of David Archuleta like the rest of America seems to be.  I don’t think Amanda Overmyer is a kick-ass rocker (in fact, I could probably go on for hours about what a bitch she seems to be).  I find the singers to be mediocre, and I just don’t understand why the judges continue to say that this group has the most talent of any other year.  Here are the singers I mind the least (and voted for last night):

1. Carly Smithson – She is probably the strongest singer in the competition, but there is that controversy surrounding a past record deal

2. David Cook – He reminds me of the Goo Goo Dolls lead singer, Johnny Rzeznik

3. Jason Castro – I really like the “singing at midnight in a dorm room” vibe.

4. Brooke White – She seems like such a nice person!  Admittedly, she doesn’t have the best voice, but her performance was moving, and more than that, I thought her tears were genuine.

5. Michael Johns – I haven’t heard him do anything amazing, but I like him enough to vote for him.  At the very least, I should vote for him to prevent him from going home before others (i.e. Ramiele Malubay, David Hernandez, Kristy Lee Cook).
